That's pretty close to the top of the line, although we should expect newer CPUs from Intel's latest Skylake generation sometime later in 2015. Both have the Intel Core i7-4710HQ CPU and Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M GPU, along with 24GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD/1TB HDD storage combo. This version of the Asus G751 had a very similar configuration to the previous non-G-Sync model we tested in 2014.
This is still a premium 17.3-inch gaming laptop that combines a high-end Core i7 CPU, a hefty 24GB of RAM, a big 256GB SSD paired with a 1TB 7,200rpm HDD, and the GeForce 980M GPU. If you've read our review of the previous version of the Asus G751, you'll find that aside from G-Sync support, little has changed. The big advantage is that you can go into the settings menu of your favorite PC games and turn off the checkbox for "v-sync," shorthand for "vertical synchronization," which can be a big performance drain, even on powerful gaming PCs. But, unless you're very familiar with how PC games look and play under different hardware, the effect is subtle. In this laptop, as well as on the Origin PC Eon17-X with G-Sync we tried at E3 2015, we saw similarly smooth results.
That's because the GPU's output in a G-Sync setup is locked to the refresh rate of the screen, which in this case is 75 frames per second. No word yet on pricing and launch, but we expect availability to be in the next few weeks.In the desktop setups we've tested it on, G-Sync has performed impressively, with games looking smoother and faster, even though we we pumping out fewer frames per second, not more. Asus seems to be including G-SYNC for the G751 only for now, though users will still get free upgrades to Windows 10 on both models. This less expensive model gets an update to the GTX 950M from the original GTX 850M on the GL551 with either a TN 1366 x 768 or IPS 1920 x 1080 display. Meanwhile, the 15.6-inch GL552 is another small step above the GL551 with new surface designs on an otherwise identical chassis. Otherwise, other core specifications and interfaces are unchanged.
The G-SYNC display appears to be an IPS panel as well based on our observations.
Asus is also marketing the GTX 980M as overclockable, which is rare for a notebook and has us wondering just how far we can push the G751 as its cooling solution is already quite good compared to the competition. While our 17.3-inch G751 test model included an i7-4710HQ, the updated configuration on show houses an i7-4870HQ and includes a free upgrade to Windows 10 when available. Our review on the G751 praised its performance and quality enough to earn it top marks on our Top 10 list of gaming notebooks. The venerable ROG series is following on the footsteps of Aorus and MSI by including Nvidia G-SYNC on the successful high-end G751.
